The BACP says that therapy is time set aside by you and the therapist to look at what brought you to therapy.   But, there has to be more to it than that, or why would you invest your hard-earned cash in such an unconvincing procedure?

My belief is that therapy empowers you to change; to see things more clearly, to be more accepting of yourself, and to cope more adaptively with life.   It enables you to live more comfortably in the world, with yourself and with your fellow men; rooted boldly in the present – not trying to escape from reality by living in the past, in the future, or in a fantasy world, built in your own mind, to reduce the pain of existing in the here and now.

Therapists help you discover the route and support you on your journey towards becoming what/who you want to be, without influencing your choice of goal or how you choose to achieve it.

Sometimes you may have a clear-cut, identifiable difficulty which can be directly addressed by a specific treatment, such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which has proven value for treating mental trauma, including PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), resulting from violation in: war, collisions, sexual assault, childhood abuse, and many other agencies.   This intervention has been shown to bring rapid and lasting relief of miseries which originate from many different causes, for most people.

How many therapies are there?

In the UK, around 200 different types of psychotherapy are practised.   Some are recognised, and utilized by the NHS; others are not.   I work only with a few, recognised, therapies:

The foundation of my work is

o Person-Centered Therapy

The ‘core conditions’ of Person-Centered Therapy, which enable you quickly to become engaged in the therapeutic process, are the bedrock on which all my work is built; but as you are a unique individual, with your own special needs, I draw on techniques from other approaches I have studied to adapt my treatment to your specific requirements.

Some other models of psychotherapy I use in my work are:

o Behavioural Therapy;

o Cognitive Therapy;

o Cognitive Behavioural Therapy;

o Dialectical Behavioural Therapy;

o Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing;

o Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy;

o Transactional Analysis
